Midweek Moment: Newton’s Bubbles

This week we read Isaac Newton by John Hudson Tiner. Sir Newton liked to blow bubbles during his years at Trinity and wonder why all the color would disappear before they popped. Oldest got out the bubble blower and watched the phenomenon for himself.

After some research we learned the reason for the swirling colors on bubbles and why they disappear. The colors come from the interaction of two waves of light interacting with one another. The two rays are reflected to the observer from the inner and outer surface of the bubble. As the liquid in the bubble evaporated the two light rays move closer together until they “disappear” or we only see white light from the sun.
